Verdi: Aida - Gencer, Simionato, Limarilli, Guefli, Giaiotti; Serafin. Verona, 1963 (No Act IV)
$9.95
Description:
Many performances of Aida have come and gone, but this one distinguishes itself in nearly every respect. Leyla Gencer is in peak form in the title role, moving effortlessly between bold, full-bodied phrases and moments of striking delicacy. Giulietta Simionato delivers a commanding Amneris, and Giangiacomo Guelfi brings flair to Amonasro, lingering on high notes to rousing effect—even if occasionally stretching the bounds of taste.
Tullio Serafin favors broader tempi, but conducts with unmistakable emotional commitment. The chorus is a highlight in its own right, singing with precision, unity, and clear, idiomatic Italian.
Unfortunately, the final act was interrupted by rain, cutting short what promised to be a powerful conclusion—particularly for Simionato in the Judgment Scene. For the sake of continuity, Act IV from another performance featuring Leontyne Price and Simionato has been included.
