Upon listening to this performance one might think that the role of Faust was written specifically for Nicolai Gedda.   It suits both his voice, temperament, and he lends great style to the part.   Mirella Freni is also wonderful as Marguerite.  Although her French may not be as idiomatic, she has no problems with both the coloratura passages or the spinto passages.   Roger Soyer seems to lack gravitas in the role of Mefistofeles.  One wants a voice like Siepi (sadly those voices are all too rare.)  Tom Krause sings the part of Valentin.  The sound is very good.
