Leonie Rysanek owned the jugendlische Wagner roles in the 50s and early 60s. By the mid-sixties and early 70s her voice had darkened and she moved into heavier roles like Salome but she held on to Elisabeth until the end of the decade. Her voice is quite warm and rich in this performance. Her declamation in the act II finale soars over all of the competing male voices and her "Dich teure Halle" sounds like a woman about to become undone with excitement. Hans Beirer is solid in the title role and Eberhard Wächter delivers an extremely nuanced "O du mein holder Abendstern."
