Giordano: Andrea Chénier - Del Monaco, Tebaldi, Protti, Di Stasio; Capuana. Tokyo, 1961
Listen to a Sample:
This recording is not new to collectors but after all these years it is still a revelation. It marks what may be the height of the verismo style. In the title role Mario Del Monaco is truly bigger than life. He sings passionately and sincerely and the voice rings like no one else. Matching him in opulence of sound is Renata Tebaldi. She caresses every note unlike any other singer and in 1961 she could still rely on her top notes. Aldo Protti's voice has a snarl to it not unlike Tito Gobbi which he uses to great effect at the beginning of "Nemico della patria" and later in the aria shows that he is capable of very beautiful singing. For those who know this recording, you need to reacquaint yourself with it and for those who are new to it, I am jealous of the revelation you are about to have. The sound is excellent.
