Renata Scotto was very new to the scene in 1959. Her voice is pure and effortless and she delivers a fantastic e flat at the end of "Sempre libera." Voice aside, her true brilliance lies in her interpretive skills which are well beyond her years. I have always thought her to be one of the was truly one of the great exponents of Italian style in her day. Nicola Filacurdi is a sturdy but unremarkable Alfredo. Mario Sereni's voice may be almost too beautiful for the part of Germont in as much as he doesn't sound like an old man. It is a flaw, however, that is very easy to forgive. The sound is excellent
