Herbert von Karajan had the power to assemble the greatest possible casts.  As if José Carreras, Mirella Freni, Fiorenza Cossotto, Piero Cappuccilli and Nicolai Ghiaurov weren't enough Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Edita Gruberova and José van Dam make up the smaller roles.  So why did Karajan have that power?  This performance will remind you (if you have forgotten) why he was such an icon.  His tempi are broad but never turgid and always musical.   Carreras sings wonderfully even if he may be a little over-parted.  Mirella Freni is heavenly.  Fiorenza Cossotto was born to sing Eboli.   The sound is absolutely outstanding.
