Pros:

  • Although she was barely 30 at the time of this performance, Renata Scotto was already a well-established artists after having burst onto the international scene singing the role of Amina in La Sonnambula at the age of 23. She brings to this performance the freshness of a young singer with the interpretive powers of a seasoned professional, and makes a good case for why she was a Lucia for the ages.
  • I have always admired Gianni Raimondi as a singer, but I always thought that he was a little milquetoast relative to his contemporaries Franco Corelli and Mario Del Monaco. He proves me wrong in this performance, particularly in his Act II outburst where he curses Lucia (listen to the sample.)
  • A young Piero Cappuccilli brings a savage nobility to the role of Enrico.

Cons:

  • None to mention.
