The 1960s were an amazing time for opera, not only for the stars that reigned the opening nights of the Met and La Scala, but for the countless other singers who may not have had as lofty ambitions but were just as colossal talents. Sometimes I feel like a broken record rhapsodizing this or that great singer who never had a major international career. In this instance, the singer in question is the absolutely stupendous Pauline Tinsley. If you do not know this soprano please listen to the sound clip immediately. The voice is truly astonishing for both its clarity and its size and she possessed about as good of a top as you could ever hope a dramatic soprano to have. It was both exciting and secure. She is joined by Donald Smith as Don Alvaro. Smith's voice possessed the steel of a great spinto tenor and the grace of an English tenor all in one package. In fact if it weren't for the fact that this Forza is in English(!) you may well forget that there is not an Italian in the whole cast. The sound is fair to good.
