Listen to a Sample:
Pros:
- One of my favorite things about this business is the ability to promote great American singers who never made it to the big-time despite their formidable talent. One such example is Marisa Galvany. Galvany's voice was like no other I have ever heard. She could chest like a mezzo and soar like a soprano. (And yes, she takes the high E flat in the Triumphal scene.)
- Lili Chookasian brings her oversized mezzo to the role of Amneris. If the role is perhaps a half-step or two beyond her comfort zone, she nonetheless makes the part work for her all while displaying her rich contralto sound.
- As if that weren't enough, Harry Theyard makes a very strong impression as Radamès, bringing virility of tone and lyricism.
Cons:
- Most of the orchestral interludes/preludes are not included in this recording, as well as some other minor omissions.
