This performance is doubly historic not only because it sports the great Maria Callas but it marks her first time assuming the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor.   It also serves as a reminder why she has been deified since her death.   Her performance is not iconoclastic.  The approach is actually quite traditional and straight-forward.  Her genius comes from her amazing attention to detail without ever seeming pedantic or forced.  She had the ability to create the kind of organic nuances that usually come from an artist living with a role for years and years.  She is joined by her frequent partner Giuseppe Di Stefano.  The two were always very well paired in terms of vocal and artistic temperament.  His final scene is truly a marvel.  I don't think there was another who relished dying on stage as much as he did.  The feeling is palpable.  The sound is fair to good.
