Rossini: Otello - Montez, Garcisanz, Langridge, Brewer; Masini. Paris, 1975

$8.95

Description:

Otello by Rossini has never fully earned its place in the standard operatic repertoire. While Verdi's version casts a long shadow, the demands of Rossini’s opera, requiring three tenors of exceptional vocal prowess, have kept it from wider recognition. This performance, however, makes a compelling case for Rossini's work, featuring a stellar trio of tenors in the lead roles.

Orlando Montez delivers an impressive portrayal of Otello, combining imposing warmth with remarkable coloratura, despite the dramatic heft of his voice. His performance is nothing short of captivating. In the role of Iago, Philip Langridge, still in the early stages of his career, proves an ideal casting choice. He sings with distinction, channeling his formidable acting skills to bring an unsettling menace to the role, rivaling greats such as Tito Gobbi and Leonard Warren. Bruce Brewer, in the role of Roderigo, nearly steals the show with his aria "Che ascolto? Ahimè, che dici?" from Act II, where his voice shines with both vulnerability and intensity.
