No matter how many times I hear Guglielmo Tell, I am always so surprised by how ahead of its time it seems. It was a written a full ten years before Lucia di Lammermoor and twelve years before Nabucco, yet it has touches of an advanced romanticism that neither of those operas achieve. This cast of dramatic voices does a splendid job. Gabriel Bacquier delivers a forceful performance in the title role. Gianni Raimondi is near perfect as Arnoldo. His voice has dramatic virility juxtaposed with astonishing control and a gleaming top. Raina Kabaivanska is captivating as Matilde. The sound is good.
