This is a rare glimpse of the very early years of Placido Domingo. Hearing this recording of Domingo in his 20s is a good argument for the idea that a star is born and not created. Not only does he bring all the vocal glamor that was his trademark throughout his career, he also displays an artistic sensibility well beyond his years. Beverly Sills sings all three heroines and although vocally she seems most at home in the Olympia scene, she intelligently crafts Antonia and Giulietta to highlight her strengths, bringing her vivid commitment that distinguished every performance she gave. Norman Treigle is equally superb as the four villains. Legendary voice teacher, Marlena Malas (going here by her maiden name Kleinman) is a wonderfully boyish Niklausse. The sound is good. Please note that the epilogue was not included in this performance.
