Donizetti’s rarely performed Poliuto gets some real star treatment in this classic performance from La Scala in Milan. Franco Corelli assumes the title role bringing all of his signature bravura while also demonstrating that in addition to his legendary high notes he possessed a legato that is right at home in Donizetti’s melodies. As Paolina, Maria Callas, finds a role into which she can completely immerse herself without exposing the flaws in her voice that were becoming more and more present by 1960. Ettore Bastianini bring imperious menace to the role of Severo. The sound is very good.
