Wagner: Der fliegende Holländer (In Italian) - Zeani, Boyer, Lamberti, Rossi-Lemeni, di Stasio; Cristoffoli. Roma, 1970
$16.95
Description:
Listening to this performance, I was struck by how the divide between Italianate and Germanic musical styles is not as vast as I once believed. Though all the singers in this recording are Italian specialists performing in Italian, Wagner’s essence remains unmistakable—so much so that, at times, I almost forgot I was listening in a different language.
Virginia Zeani, at a stage in her career where she could take bold risks, does just that. For the most part, these choices pay off. While she experiences some strain in the duet with the Dutchman, she otherwise brings her signature flair and stylistic command to the role of Senta. Antonio Boyer is magnificent in the title role, his dark baritone suiting the part perfectly. Giorgio Lamberti offers a refreshingly lyrical and elegant Erik, a welcome contrast for a role that can often devolve into sheer vocal force.
A large portion of the Act III opening chorus is missing.
