Few singers have the kind of association with one part as Boris Christoff did with his namesake part, Boris Godunov. Listening to this performance you see why he was so celebrated for this portrayal and shows that the character is more than a man with a pointy beard. His Boris has so many different shades; from paranoid to remorseful and in the final scene tender. The rest of the cast is spectacular. Regina Resnik's Marina is both cold-blooded and passionate. Sir Geraint Evans is another standout as Shchelkalov. The smaller roles were filled out by such fine singers as Joan Carlyle, Josephine Veasey and Edith Coates. The performance is conducted by Rafael Kubelik. The sound is good.
