Pros:

  • With the exception of Cesare Siepi, no one in the cast could be thought of as a "star". However, each of the soloists brings impressive technical and interpretive skills which, combined with the excellent leadership from Carlo Maria Giulini, makes this performance gel.
  • The performance is presented in the Five Act version (although the Fontainbleu act is heavily cut.)
  • A huge highlight for me was the hair-raising Grand Inquisitor scene between Cesare Siepi and Martti Talvela.

Cons:

  • The sound is slightly muffled.
