It’s a rare treat to hear two great Wagnerian sopranos share the stage, and when it happens, the results can be electrifying. This recording is a prime example. Leonie Rysanek and Astrid Varnay, while both possessing voices suited to Wagner, were very different artists who rarely overlapped in roles. What they did share, however, was an extraordinary stage presence and intensity that seemed to amplify when they performed together.
Sandor Konya shines as the Swan Knight, delivering a performance that seamlessly blends the best qualities of German and Italian vocal styles.
The sound quality is excellent.
