Jon Vickers’ voice and artistry were beyond classification. The power of his massive tenor coupled with his remarkable technique meant that he could sing Wagner with finesse and musicality, as well as bring dramatic heft to the more refined world of French opera. The voice was neither Italianate nor Germanic it was just “Vickers” and he approached each role he sang with intelligence and searing intensity. This compilation offers many of his great triumphs like Peter Grimes, Enée in Les Troyens and Siegmund as well as some interesting rarities including Tarquinius’ aria from The Rape of Lucretia and a brutal Herod from Salome.
