Wagner: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg - Bailey, Dernesch, Kmentt, Martin, Ridderbusch, Hemsley; Klobucar. Bayreuth, 1969

$16.95

Description:

No other Wagner opera places as much demand on ensemble as Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, not only from a musical standpoint but also in the intricate interplay of personal dynamics between the characters. This complexity often results in casts that may look impressive on paper but fail to truly connect, losing the essence of what makes Wagner’s most human opera so compelling. Thankfully, this stellar cast avoids that pitfall entirely.

Norman Bailey embodies Hans Sachs, his gruff yet warm voice perfectly suited to the character’s avuncular nature. Helga Dernesch, at the start of her career, brings a radiant tone to Eva Pogner. Her middle register is beautifully colored, and she navigates the challenging tessitura of her aria with ease. Waldemar Kmentt’s Walther leans more toward Don Ottavio than Siegfried, which, in my opinion, is a definite advantage. His rendition of the Preislied is sublime.

The sound quality is excellent.
