The dreamy, moody Werther would seem an odd fit for Plácido Domingo, who has always been more at home in overtly heroic roles. But Werther, more than anything else, calls for passion, and Domingo has that to spare on a bad day, which this is decidedly not. Listening to this melodramatic take on Werther, one gets the sense that it is a miracle that he has kept himself together long enough to meet Charlotte in the first place, let alone pine for her. In the person of Brigitte Fassbaender, Charlotte seems worthy of his obsession, and more than capable of meeting him passion for passion. Hans Günther Nöcker completes the love triangle as a stiff, unidiomatic Albert. Jesús López-Cobus leads the forces of the Bayerisches Staatsoper in this glorious 1977 performance.
