This performance of Aida combines a fine cast with excellent musical direction from Fernando Previtali. Theresa Coleman assumes the title role and provides opulent tone and remarkable refinement. James McCracken may not have had the most attractive voice, but the control he had over his oversized tenor voice is nothing short of amazing, making this treacherous role seem easy. Regina Resnik proves a good match for McCracken in their confrontation in Act IV. Her Amneris is formidable without being too unsympathetic. Aldo Protti delivers elegance to Amonasro’s music. The sound is very good.
