The brilliance of Verdi is not the kind that hits you over the head like a ton of bricks. I must admit that I occasionally take him for granted, particularly the operas that have become so popular. In fact the impetus for this compilation was a recent performance I attended of La Traviata. Like many of you, I am sure, I have seen this opera countless times. I don't know if it had to do with the ingenuity of the production or just that I hadn't heard it in awhile, but it was like I was hearing it for the first time. With these fresh ears I heard the dramatic subtlety that he imbues in what, on its surface, seems to be very simple music, formally speaking. The man was a master storyteller and probably has the most operas of any other opera composer that are still performed regularly today. I am very happy to offer this tribute to the great maestro. At over two hours this features some of my favorite recordings with the likes of Bastianini, Bergonzi, Caballé, Callas, Corelli, Dalis, Di Stefano, Dimitrova, Domingo, Evans, Freni, Gencer, McCracken,Nilsson, Pavarotti, Price, Rysanek, Scotto, Sutherland, Tebaldi & Tucker.
