In 1955 it was still commonplace for the Vienna State Opera to present all of their operas in German.  Leonie Rysanek assumes the title role.  Still in her twenties, her voice is incredibly fresh sounding.   Hans Hopf's voice was far from Italianate but he makes up for it with his substantial vocal heft.  It is a shame that Jean Madeira died so young.  She is wild as Amneris.  Some dislike George London in Italian parts.  I find his voice very well suited to Amonasro. The sound is very good.
