With Gwyneth Jones and Jon Vickers singing the title roles this could be thought of as Verdi with a pinch of Wagner. Certainly the voices are immense. Both maintain a sensitivity to the style and husband their resources where necessary. The final duet is particularly beautiful- an exhausted and wistful farewell. Cesare Siepi is tragic as Filippo. As a bonus I have included scenes from a performance of Don Carlo with Ingrid Bjoner, Brigitte Fassbaender and Hans Hotter.
