Pros:

  • Coming to Schoenberg via works like Erwartung and Moses und Aron, it is always shocking for me to then visit Gurre-Lieder to hear how far he veered from his earlier style. Gurre-Lieder manages to weave hints of Wagner and influences of Strauss, but with a healthy portion of his own unique voice, resulting in a work that feels familiar yet new at the same time.
  • Gundula Janowitz is divine as Tove and Christa Ludwig makes much of her brief scene.
  • The sound is excellent..

Cons:

  • None to mention.
