Placido Domingo, like many other great tenors, shied away from the role of the Duke in Rigoletto. Here in 1969 he is able to render the role quite well. Although his vocal production might not have the ease that other tenors have brought, he brings a wonderful vocal color and charisma. It is a shame that there aren't more recordings of Sylvia Geszty. Her soprano was perfect in roles like Gilda because she could deliver both the coloratura and a very appealing and rich voice. Most sopranos in this fach have little interest in their middle voices. The sound is fair but the voices come through.
