Pros:

  • Mario Zanasi has a triumph in this performance, displaying beauty of tone and ease of production in the titular role.
  • As Lady Macbeth, Marion Lippert brings Wagnerian power throughout her range without showing any signs of struggle when Verdi requires a more delicate touch.
  • Gianni Raimondi steals the show with "Alla paterna mano" and nearly causes a riot when Fernando Previtali chooses not to do an encore in spite of the vociferous demands of the audience.

Cons:

  • The sound lacks range, but the quality of the voices still comes through.
