Pros:

  • Anna Moffo makes an excellent argument for Puccini's most underrated score, bringing a combination of glamor and full-throated passion to the role of Magda.
  • Henry Price brings both personality and sweetness of tone to the role of Prunier.
  • Anton Guadagno favors a more leisurely approach to the score, ignoring Puccini's tempo markings, which gives the singers a chance to truly luxuriate in Puccini's melodies.

Cons:

  • Beniamino Prior's Ruggero comes off a bit wooden.
