Description:

When excerpted in concert or "highlights" CDs, Das Rheingold often gets overlooked. Apart from its triumphant finale, it lacks many of Wagner’s signature, show-stopping orchestral moments. However, Das Rheingold is far more than the sum of a few grand opera numbers. Perhaps more than any other of Wagner's works, it epitomizes his ideal of "Unendliche Melodie" (unending melody). The entire opera unfolds as an accompagnato recitativo, meticulously crafted to mirror the natural inflection of speech and convey the text’s emotional nuances.

This recording brings all these features to life through the exceptional performances of its singing actors. Theo Adam delivers a virile, youthful Wotan, striking a perfect balance between brashness and elegance. Janis Martin lends her attractive and slender voice to Fricka, Helga Dernesch embodies a winsome and voluptuous Freia, and Josef Greindl and Karl Ridderbusch form an excellent pair of lumbering yet deeply sympathetic giants.

The standout performance, however, comes from Wolfgang Windgassen as Loge. Free from the taxing demands of the heldentenor roles he typically tackled, he demonstrates that he was much more than a powerful voice. His nuanced portrayal adds depth and charisma to the trickster god.

Conductor Lorin Maazel, though not primarily an opera specialist, shows remarkable insight into both the musical and dramatic pacing of the work. The sound quality is excellent.
