Offenbach: Les Contes d'Hoffmann - Kmentt, Silja, Wiener, Kunz, Schöffler, Stolze; Krips. Wien, 1966

Description:

This performance of Les Contes d’Hoffmann takes on the ambitious challenge of casting one soprano in all three leading soprano roles—a feat Jacques Offenbach never intended but which has tempted many great singers. Few sopranos possess the versatility to transition convincingly from a coloratura to a lyric spinto to a dramatic soprano within a single evening. Fortunately, this recording features one of opera's most versatile sopranos: Anja Silja.

At this stage in her career, Silja was already established as a Wagnerian soprano, yet she demonstrates remarkable agility as Olympia, delivering spot-on high notes and sparkling coloratura. As Antonia, she reveals the lyrical warmth of her voice, bringing poignancy to the role. Giulietta, perhaps the least ideal match for her instrument, demands more of her middle voice than she seems entirely comfortable with. Even so, she rises above these challenges through the sheer magnetism of her stage presence.

The cast is rounded out by Waldemar Kmentt, who excels as Hoffmann, alongside a stellar lineup of legendary singers: Otto Wiener as the four villains, Gerhard Stolze as the servants, Paul Schöffler as Crespel, Grace Hoffman as Antonia’s mother, and Erich Kunz as Spalanzani.
