Listen to a Sample:
This recording almost didn’t make the list due to its sound quality. However, the cast is truly the stuff of dreams, and there are moments when the brilliance of Price or Simionato cuts through the flaws, making it a worthwhile listen. That said, this one is really for the die-hard collectors (you know who you are).
Leontyne Price’s Aida needs no introduction—her brilliance in the role is the legendary. Giulietta Simionato, though nearing the end of her career, proves her voice was still in fine form, delivering a performance as Amneris that is both fearsome and vulnerable. Ettore Bastianini is in top form, adding further depth to the ensemble.
Herbert von Karajan’s pacing and his keen sense of melodic line are exemplary, adding to the recording’s appeal (despite its technical limitations.)
