It was definitely time for a compilation featuring Ettore Bastianini. I had amassed many varied and interesting recordings featuring the baritone in some of his greatest roles as well as some interesting deviations. The process of putting this compilation together also served as a great reminder of how great this singer was (and what a tragedy it was for his career to be cut so short.) Bastianini started his career as a bass and that rich color never left him after his switch to baritone making him very effective in roles like Scarpia and Di Luna. That said he is equally impressive in roles like Renato in Un Ballo in maschera as well as Michele in Il Tabarro where a little pathos is called for. At over two hours, this compilation features excerpts from La Damnation de Faust, Mazeppa, Andrea Chénier, Adriana Lecouvreur, Il Tabarro, Tosca, Nabucco, La Battaglia di Legnano, Il Trovatore, Un Ballo in maschera, Aida and Don Carlo and shows the legacy that a great singer can leave even when their time with us was all too brief.
