Verdi: Falstaff (In Swedish) - Wixell, Söderström, Ericson, Roedin, Saeden, Hoiseth; Gielen. Stockholm, 1963

$8.95

Description:

This performance, sung in Swedish, demonstrates that Verdi—and by extension, Shakespeare—can effortlessly transcend language barriers. In fact, performing in their native tongue seems to allow the singers greater freedom to infuse the opera with the vitality and exuberance it demands.

Ingvar Wixell delivers an excellent portrayal of the old knight, though his voice carries a slightly more youthful tone than one might typically expect for the role. Elisabeth Söderström is equally delightful, bringing charm and wit to Alice. The sound is good.
