Gluck: Iphigénie en Tauride (In German) - A. Konetzni, Singher, von Pataky, Prohaska; Kleiber. Buenos Aires, 1937
$16.95
Listen to a Sample:
Pros:
- This performance of Iphigenie en Tauride (sung in German) makes an excellent case for a Wagnerian scale approach to an opera by Gluck. Even the the staunchest purest cannot deny the visceral excitement of having a singer like Anny Konetzni in the title role.
- Erich Kleiber brings a perfect combination of Mozartian elegance and Wagnerian power to the proceedings.
Cons:
- The sound is as you would expect from an aircheck made in 1937.

Wonderful Gluck
I love this recording. I was expecting something rather old-fashioned and perhaps rather heavy, but in fact Kleiber conducts with great pace and energy, and the dances go at an incredible lick! For a performance given over 80 years ago it sounds remarkably up-to-date to me. Konetzni is great in the title role, passionate and moving with some glorious top notes. The rest of the cast does a good job too, and I think the quality of the recording is good for 1937.
