Few tenors in the history of opera have had the combination of vocal control that is so important to singing and abandon that is so important to opera. Carlo Bergonzi is certainly one of those singers and he uses those skills to great effect as Werther. This performance is in Italian which does change the feel of the music slightly but at least this Italian cast seems very at home in the vernacular. Bianca Maria Casoni sings with vibrancy and dark tones although, the voice may lack the ability to achieve the delicacy that this score needs at times. The rest of the cast is sturdy but the night was clearly Bergonzi's. The sound is excellent.
