Carmen

Georges Bizet (1838–1875)

DESCRIPTION

This cast of Carmen is about as strong as they come. Though the lineup might suggest a night of Die Walküre, each singer proves more than capable of handling Bizet’s more delicate French style.

At the center is Regina Resnik, whose Carmen is both seasoned and layered. She brings a grounded sensuality and vocal color that shift seamlessly between the earthy and the enigmatic. James King, known for his larger-scale roles, adapts his sizable tenor with surprising finesse as Don José. His portrayal is fiery yet refined, and he floats the final lines of the duet with Micaëla with particular grace.

Gundula Janowitz as Micaëla is a rarity on record, which makes this performance all the more special. Her voice—clear, steely, and pure—suits the role beautifully. Walter Berry rounds out the main cast with a bold and vocally rich Escamillo, full of confidence and flair.
