This performance of Die Walküre marked the first opera to be performed in Vienna since the bombing and subsequant reconstruction of the Vienna State Opera. It is only fitting that the cast should include singers just embarking on international careers like Leonie Rysanek, Birgit Nilsson and Christa Ludwig (Waltraute.) These are singers who would define the post WWII Wagnerian sensibility and cleanse it of its past. Hans Hotter is imperious and loving as Wotan and Ludwig Suthaus is a virile Siegmund. Fans of Herbert von Karajan's Ring will find this a little more straight forward but inspired none-the-less. The sound is not the best but this is a truly historical document.
