Description:
Otto Klemperer lightens his approach to Wagner's effervescent comedy, bringing transparent textures and surprisingly fleet tempi to the performance. The all-Hungarian cast does extremely well, particularly György Losonczy as Sachs, who generously gives of his luscious bass-baritone throughout the evening without a hint of fatigue. József Simándy, as Walther, displays a lyrical, technically flawless instrument that reminds me a bit of Wolfgang Windgassen. The sound quality is very good, allowing the performance to shine despite occasional orchestral intonation issues.
