This performance of Aida reminds the listener why Renata Tebaldi commands such enduring admiration. The voice is produced with notable steadiness, breadth, and free from strain. However, rather than relying on sheer tonal opulence, she shapes her phrases with care, attentive to Verdi’s dynamic markings as well as her own keen instincts.
Rita Gorr offers a compelling Amneris, combining vocal amplitude with dramatic acuity. Her portrayal balances seduction and emotional instability, and her high notes are as secure as Tebaldi's. The male principals, by comparison, are serviceable but not as distinguished.
