Silvano
Pietro Mascagni (1863–1945)
DESCRIPTION
Five years after the groundbreaking success of Cavalleria Rusticana, Pietro Mascagni returned to familiar terrain with Silvano, another one-act opera steeped in rustic drama and romantic entanglement. Set among peasant life on the Adriatic coast, this compact work once again revolves around a love triangle—a formula that had previously served Mascagni so well. However, Silvano did not achieve the same lasting resonance with audiences or critics.
Yet, to dismiss it outright would be to overlook the opera’s expressive economy and the composer’s refined sensitivity to vocal writing. Throughout, Mascagni demonstrates a keen ability to sculpt emotional immediacy through lyrical intensity and deft orchestral shading. The score bears his characteristic blend of melodic directness and structural precision.
The cast assembled here rises admirably to the task, with Aldo Bertocci delivering a particularly compelling interpretation in the title role.
