DESCRIPTION

Ildebrando Pizzetti remains a composer ripe for rediscovery, his work poised at the juncture of late romanticism and modernism, marked by a structural clarity and an often austere lyricism that eschews overt sentimentality. His orchestration is lean but evocative, favoring modal harmonies and a dramaturgical sense rooted in biblical stories.

By 1961, the sheen of Giuseppe Di Stefano’s once-unparalleled lyric tenor had begun to show signs of wear. Yet this does little to diminish the sense of urgency and dramatic sincerity he brings to the role of Giuliano. Rosanna Carteri’s luminous soprano, meanwhile, benefits from a role clearly shaped with her voice in mind, offering ample space for expressive phrasing.
