Gounod: Roméo et Juliette
Eda-Pierre, Sandor, Serkoyan; de Almeida
Nice, 1977
$9.95
Description:
The role of Juliette sits at the intersection of lyric spinto and lyric coloratura, a balance that often proves elusive. Too frequently, the soprano voice is either too heavy or too light for the part. Christiane Eda-Pierre, however, meets the demands with remarkable poise—opening with a radiant “Je veux vivre” and later offering rich, velvety phrasing in the love duet with Roméo.
John Sandor makes a strong impression as Roméo, his style and timbre occasionally evoking memories of Alfredo Kraus.
Juliette’s poison aria is unfortunately omitted, but the performance remains compelling overall.
