Stabat Mater

Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868)

DESCRIPTION

In spite of its foundation in an ancient liturgical text, Rossini’s Stabat Mater may well rank among the composer’s most musically and dramatically forward-looking works. The writing for soprano, in particular, hints at an aesthetic sensibility that borders on the Wagnerian. Leontyne Price underscores this impression with singing of remarkable power and fervor, especially in the “Inflammatus,” where her vocal command is nothing short of arresting. John Alexander contributes sterling vocalism in his solo, “Cujus animam gementem,” blending clarity of line with a refined emotional expression.
