Donizetti: Anna Bolena - Scotto, Marsee, Kolk, Ramey, K. Ciesinski; Rudel. 1975
$9.95
Description:
While Anna Bolena is often seen as a soprano showcase, its success hinges just as much on the strength of its supporting cast. Ideally, the title role is anchored by a commanding soprano surrounded by singers who can match her dramatically and vocally. This performance delivers exactly that.
Renata Scotto is captured here at the dramatic height of her career. By 1975, her voice had begun to darken, allowing her to explore weightier roles without sacrificing the bel canto finesse that had made her a standout in roles like Adina and Lucia. In this performance, she throws herself into the role of Anna with fearless abandon, wringing meaning from every flourish, phrase, and even the simplest line of recitative.
She is superbly supported by Susanne Marsee, whose Giovanna combines agility with vocal power. Samuel Ramey brings a youthful authority to Enrico, his presence both imposing and charismatic. Stanley Kolk sings admirably as Percy, though his lighter tenor is slightly overshadowed by the larger-than-life personalities around him. A young Katherine Ciesinski makes a strong impression as Smeton. The sound is excellent, capturing both the vocal detail and dramatic atmosphere of this inspired performance.
