When choosing recordings of Manon Lescaut the two most important questions are "who sings Manon?" and "who sings Des Grieux?"  This performance hits the mark for both.  Virginia Zeani is perfect in this type of role.  Her voice is full and rich, yet she is able to convey the youth and mental frailty of the title role.  Placido Domingo sights Des Grieux as the hardest Puccini role for tenor.  Perhaps he was inspired by this task because he sings the role thrillingly hitting all of the climaxes with abandon.   He sounds demented during "No, pazzo son" (hear the clip.)  The sound is good.

BONUS
Virginia Zeani sings "Chi il bel sogno di Doretta" from La Rondine
Placido Domingo sings "E lucevan le stelle" from Tosca
