Verdi: Don Carlo (In French) - Vanzo, Bonnet, Macaux, Despraz, Bianco; Bruck. France, 1961

$9.95

Description:

Although the names in this cast may not be instantly recognizable, this performance of Don Carlo holds plenty of interest for dedicated fans. Notably, it is sung in French, but follows the 1884 Milan version rather than the original Paris version—an unusual and compelling combination. Alain Vanzo brings elegance and pathos to the title role, supported by strong performances from René Bianco as Posa and Xavier Depraz as Filippo II. The Filippo/Inquisitor scene is particularly thrilling, thanks in part to Jacques Mars in the latter role. Charles Bruck takes a more expansive approach to the pacing, which proves effective in bringing clarity to the text without losing dramatic momentum. While it may not be a definitive reading of the opera, it offers fresh insights into the score.

There are caveats: Germaine Bonnet, as Elisabeth, is vocally miscast, and the performance includes severe cuts—even by the standards of the 1960s. Still, the unique language/version pairing and quality of the male leads make it a worthwhile listen.
