Tristan und Isolde
While Birgit Nilsson was exiled from the U.S. due to her tax problems, she was still singing very well in Europe. This performance finds her well into her 50s after having weathered a steady diet of Wagner for two decades. It is a true testament to her skills as a vocal technician that she was able to maintain the purity of tone and ease at the top past the age when most dramatic sopranos had retired. She is joined by Helge Brilioth. Brilioth's tenor is on the lyrical side, but he sings with intelligence and never pushes his tone beyond its means. Peter Meven is very good as Marke, as is Beverly Wolff as Brangäne (although she could have bothered to learn it better). Zubin Mehta seems to find the softer grain of the score and brings out some incredibly delicate textures.

Excellent Tristan
I agree with the other reviewers. This is an excellent Tristan. The sound is very good broadcast stereo from Italian Radio. Nilsson is Nilsson and can't be beat as Isolde. The remaining cast is also very good if not up to Nilsson. Buy and enjoy,

Wonderful Performance in Excellent Sound!
Birgit Nilsson was 54 or near it when this performance was given, but you'd never guess it so secure is her voice and interpretation. The top notes shine as they always did and her portrayal has grown more complex after the years at Bayreuth. By her side Brilioth is equally terrific. His voice is more lyrical than others, but he knows what his voice can and can't do and he doesn't push it to fill out the lines. His Act Three delirium is very moving as is his account of the "Isolde! Wie schon bist du!"Beverly Wolff sings very well, if without the sheer voice that Christa Ludwig enjoyed. She sings the Watch beautifully, blending seamlessly with the orchestra. Nimsgern and Meven are both excellent, Meven singing his long monologue like a long Schubert song. Gianfranco Pastine and Wander Bertolini are to be commended for their fine work in the two small tenor roles. Mehta conducts an exciting performance that never drags (he makes the traditional cut in the Act Two duet).The sound is excellent broadcast stereo. All Tristan lovers should have this, even if you have other performances with Nilsson as Isolde.

A fantastic Tristan
I am amazed by how wonderful is this performance. I think it is one of Nilsson's best ever Isoldes. But the revelation is Helge Brilioth as Tristan. He is a singer I much admire, and the best acted Siegfried I have ever seen. But he surpasses himself in this Tristan. And the quality of the recording is superb. NImsgern is also a wonderful Kurvenal. In fact the only performance which is not superb - but still perfectly adequate - is Beverly Wolff as Brangaene who doesn't quite match the heights of a Ludwig or Minton. But this is definitely now one of my favourite recordings of the opera. Mehta is quite fast, but passionate and exciting.
