Wagner: Tristan und Isolde - Nilsson, Brilioth, Ericson, Borg, S. Björling; Varviso. Stockholm 1970
$14.95
Description:
Birgit Nilsson spent part of the early 1970s effectively exiled from the U.S. due to unresolved tax issues—a regrettable circumstance, as these years marked a late prime in her career. Now in her 50s, she retained full command of her formidable soprano, which had acquired a darker, richer timbre. Perhaps even more significantly, she began to explore her characters with deeper psychological insight, resulting in performances that were as dramatically compelling as they were vocally towering.
She is partnered here by fellow Swede Helge Brilioth, whose youthful, ardent tenor rises admirably to the punishing demands of Tristan. His performance is both impassioned and vocally secure, offering a compelling counterpart to Nilsson’s increasingly introspective Isolde. Barbro Ericson brings a more maternal than sisterly tone to Brangäne, but her singing remains graceful and well-phrased. Sigurd Björling’s voice shows signs of wear, yet he delivers a vocally honest and dramatically committed Kurwenal.
