Siegfried (Act III, Scene ii)
The real revelation in this performance comes from conductor Alexander Gibson, who brings out unexpected nuance and a welcome lightness in the score. His pacing and phrasing give the music space to breathe, and he proves a reliable partner to the singers, even in the most demanding stretches.
Helga Dernesch confirms why she so captivated Karajan during this period. Her Brünnhilde is commanding in the major climactic moments, but it's in the quieter, more inward passages that she truly distinguishes herself—singing with poise, warmth, and dramatic subtlety. Ticho Parly, though clearly pushed to his limits at times, generally holds his own. While the strain occasionally surfaces, his lyric tenor manages to stay resilient through to the final curtain.

Excellent Performance in Uneven Sound!
Helge Dernesch's Brunnhilde was a known commodity by 1971 (she sang the role in Karajan's studio recording). Here she sounds relaxed and in very confident voice. She makes all the top Bs and Cs, including the optional one at the end. The warm beauty of her middle register is also much in evidence. Ticho Parly makes it through though not with flying colors. He had sung the role in Bayreuth several times as well as elsewhere and knew what he was supposed to do. His voice is steady and attractive, if without the ideal power one wants to hear during the final five minutes Gibson leads a beautifully fluid traversal of the last 46 minutes of the opera. The Scottish Opera Orchestra plays strongly, a few horn flubs notwithstanding. The sound is good, but there is some volume wavering during the last ten minutes or so. It is listenable, if a little irritating given how good the rest of it had been.Dernesch fans will definitely want this!

Dernesch at her best
Helga Dernesch sings fearlessly and imaginitively in this complete rendering of her Siegfried Brünnhilde, considered the hardest of the three, and one in which she excels. She is ably partnered by the spontaneous flow of Alexander Gibson’s support. Ticho Parly essays Siegfried confidently. The sound is decent. The applause ecstatic upon conclusion with a huge high C from Dernesch. The whole of the scene is presented and that works well.
